Katie Bernard is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Psychology as well as a Master’s of Science in Community Counseling, both from Winona State University. Prior to joining the Healthy Living Program she was a practicing Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor at Mayo Clinic. Her work as a counselor and love for health and wellness lead her to pursuing a career as a Wellness Coach. She loves to help individuals undercover their true potential, find their motivation and put that into action so they can live their best lives. Katie approaches coaching in a positive, light-hearted, somewhat humorous, but no nonsense way, much like the way she approaches life. Katie has contributed to online articles for Healthy Living Online where she bring coaching philosophies through electronic media. She is a life-long learner and is always searching out new ways to connect and inspire the individuals she interacts with.
Karleah Bradley is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program where she collaborates with guests to make desired behavior change. She is a published research author and is an instructor for the Mayo Clinic Wellness Coaching Training Program. Karleah has nearly twenty years of experience in developing and delivering weight management programs, incentive programs, women’s strength training programs, fitness testing, exercise program design, wellness coaching services and research. In addition, she has collaborated in clinical care at Mayo Clinic through physician coaching referrals via the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center- Mayo Clinic’s employee worksite wellness program. She holds multiple wellness coaching certifications and is a certified Exercise Physiologist through American College of Sports Medicine.
Dr. Michael Burke has a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Rutgers University, and a Master Degree in Human Service from Lincoln University. He is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Mayo College of Medicine and the Coordinator for the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Burke supervises a program that treats more than 2,500 patients and educates more than 400 health professionals per year. The treatment program is integrated into the Mayo Model of Care and provides treatment for tobacco dependence in a variety of medical settings including an intensive 8 day Residential Treatment Program. The education program provides training and certification for Tobacco Treatment Specialists as well as facilitating specific educational programs to equip learners to help patients change health behaviors. Dr. Burke served as President of the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence and chaired the committee that developed practice standards for Tobacco Treatment Specialists. He has also served as a team member on the Board of Directors for the National Consortium for the Credentialing of Health and Wellness Coaches.
Amy Charland is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. She has worked as a wellness coach since 2005 in a variety of roles at Mayo Clinic. During this time, she has been involved with lifestyle medicine initiatives focused on disease management and was honored with the Merit of Excellence Award for her work related to a telephonic-based program for depression management. She currently serves on the Research Executive Group committee for the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program and has been involved with several departmental projects related to quality improvement and program development. Her undergraduate degree is in art therapy and her master’s degree is in education. Prior to working in the health and wellness field, Amy was a college administrator. Embracing a career change, she decided to follow her passion for coaching, which led her to the arena of wellness coaching. She is currently completing advanced coach training through an accredited International Coach Federation (ICF) training program and has also pursued additional training in happiness, burn-out and positive psychology.
Jason Ewoldt is a Registered Dietitian at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. He has worked in many different settings involving health and wellness including fitness centers, corporate wellness and clinics. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Dietetics and a master’s degree in Human Nutrition both from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Beyond working as a Wellness Dietitian Jason also teaches nutrition courses for both undergraduates and graduates for a regional university and is a Certified Sports Specialist Dietitian.
Jamie Friend is a Resiliency Specialist, National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach and Registered Yoga Teacher at the Mayo Clinic-Healthy Living Program. She has worked with individuals on behavior change strategies around the topics of stress, weight management and mindful movement since 2001. Jamie holds a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Winona State University and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Jamie has studied coursework in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Yoga, and Dr. Amit Sood’s Attention and Interpretation Training through Mayo Clinic. In addition, Jamie is an AFAA certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor. Wellness Coach Training allowed Jamie to take her skills to the next level by gaining a deeper understanding of what motivates people to change.
Julie Hathaway is a Patient Education Specialist and Research Program Coordinator in the Office of Patient Education, Mayo Clinic Rochester. She completed a Master’s of Science degree in Counseling in 1996 and is an Assistant Professor of Medical Education in the College of Medicine. Julie is also a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Certified Wellness Coach. Professional responsibilities include managing multiple qualitative and quantitative research and evaluation projects, collaborating with researchers throughout Mayo Clinic, and qualitative data collection and analysis. She has presented locally and nationally on patient education, coaching, and other topics.
Melissa Mapes is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. For over 15 years, she has worked with individuals on behavior change strategies on the topics of weight management, exercise, nutrition and stress management. She holds a dual bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and in Human Nutrition from Kansas State University. She holds multiple wellness coaching certifications and is a certified Exercise Physiologist through American College of Sports Medicine. Melissa is a faculty member of the Mayo Clinic Wellness Coach Training Program and finds passion and purpose in working with training participants through mentoring opportunities and teaching best practice strategies.
Nolan is a Wellness Exercise Specialist at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. He shares his enthusiasm for research and education around Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) at every opportunity. He serves as team lead for NEAT offerings and has developed NEAT: Burn Calories Without Exercising and The NEAT Experience: Sit Less, Move More programs. In addition to providing education around NEAT, Nolan specializes in exercise training and fitness assessment. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology-Human Performance & Health Promotion from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Kinesiology-Sports Conditioning; Corrective Exercise & Orthopedic Rehabilitation from A.T. Still University. He is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as an Exercise Physiologist, and is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach. With a passion for health, helping and serving others, and a never-ending thirst for knowledge, Nolan strives to inspire, motivate, and empower his clients toward greater wellness and sustainable lifestyle change.
Stacy Peterson is a Resiliency Specialist at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. For the past 10 years, she has worked with individuals and groups on improving wellness and building lasting change through wellness coaching.. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse and has studied additional coursework in Group Coaching, Positive Psychology, Living on Purpose, and Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART). She holds multiple certifications in Wellness Coaching, including the National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach designation and a certification in Clinical Exercise Physiology from the American College of Sports Medicine. Stacy has contributed to worksite wellness research in the area of Non-exercise Activity Thermogenesis, online articles for Healthy Living Online and has special interest in topics of resiliency and faith, holistic wellness and intentional living.
Bradly Prigge is a Wellness Exercise Specialist for the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. Brad has been helping people find joy through being active and engaging in movement experiences for over seventeen years. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science and a Master’s of Education degree in Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota. His continuing professional education includes being a certified Exercise Physiologist through the American College of Sports Medicine and also a level 2 MovNat Certified Trainer. Brad’s interest in Wellness Coaching has led him to complete three wellness coaching training programs. Brad blends his coaching skills with fitness by developing the Physical Activity component for the Mayo Clinic Wellness Coach Training Program.
Karin Pyan is a Nationally Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach at the Mayo Clinic – Healthy Living Program. She is passionate about helping individuals reach their potential in wellness areas of nutrition, physical activity and resilience. In her role as a Certified Wellness Coach, Karin collaborated in clinical research to implement wellness coaching with pre-diabetic patients, exploring the impacts of coaching in the clinical care model. Since 1981, Karin has worked with individuals making positive behavior change, initially as a Recreational Therapist in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology. As a therapist working in group sessions, she assisted individuals in finding enhanced wellbeing. In 2001, this desire to help others, led Karin to her career in wellness coaching at the Mayo Clinic Tobacco Quit Line. She earned the Mayo Clinic Merit of Excellence Award for her team’s contributions in earning accreditation of Quit Line programs. Karin and her colleagues launched the Mayo Clinic Lifestyle Coaching Program providing Fortune 500 companies with telephonic coaching services across the nation. As a Mentor Coach in the Mayo Clinic Wellness Coach Training Program, Karin enjoys guiding others in their pursuit of personal growth and sharing her career coaching experiences to benefit new practitioners in the field.
Therese Shumaker has worked in the field of Nutrition and Wellness for over 25 years. She is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian. She has a Masters’ Degrees in Exercise Science and Counseling. She received academic appointment from the Mayo Clinic as Instructor in Nutrition in 2014. She is the Coordinator of Addiction Programming at the Mayo Clinic-Nicotine Dependence Center where she helps patients in a variety of settings (outpatient, inpatient and residential). She is certified as a Tobacco Treatment Specialist, serving as a course facilitator for the Mayo TTS program and speaks nationally on motivational interviewing. She is a nationally certified Wellness Coach and serves as faculty in the Mayo Clinic Wellness Coaching Program.
Jenny is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program where she collaborates with guests to make desired behavior change in the areas of weight management, exercise, nutrition and stress management. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Community Health Education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. After graduation she managed a fitness facility where her passion for helping individuals create healthy habits grew. This passion led her to a position doing telephonic health and wellness coaching with individuals from all walks of life, from all corners of the United States. Telephonic coaching was instrumental in honing both her verbal and non-verbal coaching skills. Since joining the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program in 2015 she has found great joy in the mix of both in person coaching, and telephonic coaching. Jenny feels it is truly an honor to be a part of an individual’s wellness journey and to be able to witness their transformation. This is what drives her to continue to learn and grow as both an individual and a wellness coach.
Dr. Kristin Vickers serves as the Medical Director of the Mayo Clinic Wellness Coach Training Program. She leads the the development of training education on topics including; empathic redirection and goal setting and self efficacy. In addition to coach training, she is the Medical Director of the Wellness Coaching Division of the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program where she provides consultation to a department of Nationally Board Certified- Healthy and Wellness Coaches. Kristin is vested in research at Mayo Clinic with nearly 100 published articles on patient education, behavior change, wellness coaching and resiliency.
Jen Welper is a certified executive chef with a degree in both culinary arts and nutrition. Working as a wellness executive chef at the Mayo Clinic Health Living Program, she creates practical healthy meals that everyone can relate to, and teaches patients and guests how to efficiently meal plan and prep for everyday healthy living. Prior to Mayo Clinic, she assisted individuals in weight-management goals by sharing her culinary expertise at Hilton Head Health. She was recently received the honor of Distinguished Chef of the Year by Johnson & Wales University.
Brooke Werneburg works with patients and clients as a Resiliency Specialist and is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. Since 1999, she has worked with individuals on behavior change strategies on the topics of stress, resiliency, weight management and self-care. She holds multiple wellness coaching certifications and a bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion from the University of Northern Iowa. She studied additional coursework in Positive Psychology, Living on Purpose, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, and Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART). Brooke contributes to research in the study of stress and resiliency, quality of life, and wellness coaching and is published in a variety of peer-reviewed articles and has presented nationally. In 2017, she received her academic appointment as Assistant Professor of Medicine by Mayo Clinic. She serves as an invited reviewer for the Mayo Clinic Health Newsletter and is contributor to the Mayo Clinic Patient Education learning library. Brooke describes wellness coaching as the key to an individual’s behavior change process- exploring wellness, motivation and lifestyle habits through a new lens for learning about one’s self. Coaching provides the potential for unlocking the possibility of change!
Mary Wirtz is a Registered Dietitian at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. She is a Wellness Dietitian working with adults to achieve lifestyle goals in weight management and overall health and wellness. Prior to this position, she worked as a Registered Dietitian in the Department of Organ Transplant at the Mayo Clinic. She holds a Master’s degree in Human Nutritional Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and a Bachelors in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She completed a dietetic internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital. In her free time, Mary enjoys running and has completed numerous marathons including the Boston Marathon. She also enjoys spending down time with her husband and daughter. Mary has a passion for wellness and helping to create an environment for healthy lifestyles to thrive!
